Those Who Didn’t Vote for Me, I Work for Them Also”: Nitin Gadkari on Marathi Pride, Migrant Concerns and Caste Politics

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari spoke candidly about language, identity, politics and national unity during his appearance on Shekhar Tonight, where a conversation on Marathi pride evolved into a broader discussion on migrants, public responsibility and the future of Indian politics. Speaking about Maharashtra and the Marathi language, Gadkari said that his experiences outside the state helped him realise the true strength and cultural richness of Marathi identity. He expressed pride in Marathi literature, theatre, music and poetry, while emphasising that India’s real strength lies in its diversity.

“We are proud of the Marathi language, Marathi culture, Marathi theatre, Marathi literature and Marathi songs. When I started spending more time outside Maharashtra, I truly understood the importance of the Marathi language. Our greatest strength is unity in diversity, and that is what makes our country beautiful,” Gadkari said.

The discussion then shifted towards the ongoing Marathi language debate in Maharashtra. Host Shekhar Suman raised concerns over statements allegedly targeting migrant workers and non-Marathi speakers in the state. With his trademark humour, Shekhar Suman remarked that comments suggesting people who cannot speak Marathi should not be allowed to drive auto-rickshaws or scooters had made “Biharis like us a little nervous,” adding jokingly, “Please take care of us too.”

Responding with a smile, Gadkari defended his record and highlighted infrastructure development in Bihar after the separation of Bihar and Jharkhand. “You are a Bihari. Let me tell you one thing — after Bihar became a separate state, we built the maximum number of bridges and roads over the Ganga and changed the picture of Bihar. If we were against Biharis, would we have done all this?” he said.

The minister later clarified his stand on language and regional identity, stressing that linguistic pride should never turn into fanaticism. “We have even said that if someone had to work as an auto-rickshaw driver, they should learn Marathi because language can affect work opportunities. Every language should take pride in its literature and culture, but that pride should never become fanaticism or obsession,” he added.

Gadkari also reflected on the nature of politics and the role of the public in shaping governance. According to him, politics is far more complex than simply gaining power and often involves compromises, contradictions and limitations.

“Politics is not just about power. It is a mix of agreements, compulsions, limitations and contradictions. Sometimes the people themselves are more responsible than political parties for the politics they dislike. The day the public firmly decides what it will and will not accept, the system will begin to change,” he said.

Speaking about his personal political principles, Gadkari strongly opposed caste-based politics and reiterated his commitment to treating every citizen equally, regardless of their background. “I have been elected MP three times. I decided long ago that I would never compromise on my principles and values. When caste-based agitations were rising in Maharashtra, I openly said that I would strongly oppose anyone doing caste politics,” he stated.

“For me, every person in my Lok Sabha constituency is part of my family — whether they voted for me or not. I work equally for everyone and will never discriminate on the basis of caste, religion, faith, language or gender,” Gadkari added.

The conversation has drawn attention online for its mix of humour, political commentary and Gadkari’s emphasis on balancing regional pride with national unity.Gadkari while summing up said ” I am not publicity hungry – respect should be earned and not demanded ‘ – the man who is down to earth and fears no fall gave his signature smile on the show and the audience were thrilled to hear him break the monotony of a political show.
